RAY PATIN
Ray Maurice Patin nasce a Lafayette, in Louisiana, il 14 ottobre 1906, da Maurice Patin e Therese Durand, entrambi nati in Louisiana ma di origini francesi. Ha una sorella maggiore, Vinnie Therese. Suo padre è fondatore del quotidiano Daily Advertiser. Nel 1920 i Patin vivono ad Albuquerque, New Mexico. La famiglia si trasferisce poi in California nei primi anni Venti.
Ray debutta nel campo dell’animazione nei primi anni Trenta, presso lo studio di Charles Mintz. Passa poi allo Studio di Hugh Harman e Rudolph Ising.
Il 17 settembre 1932 sposa a Los Angeles la californiana Maxine Jane Riley (1914-2010), che gli dà una figlia, Renee, nel 1939.
Nel dicembre 1937 Patin è approdato alla Disney, dove è uno degli animatori dei cortometraggi di Topolino e poi di Paperino fino al 1941.
Dopo il grande sciopero del 1941 passa allo studio Schlesinger/Warner Bros., come animatore e sceneggiatore.
Nel 1944 collabora con l’Industrial Fim and Poster Service (che diverrà poi UPA) e inizia a disegnare storie a fumetti per il Sangor Shop, capeggiato da Jim Davis. Un anno dopo diviene presidente della Screen Cartoonists Guild e lascia la Warner per seguire Davis allo studio Carry-Weston di J. Richard Weston, dove è uno degli animatori del film promozionale per la Difesa The Inside Story of Seaman Joe.
Nel 1947 fonda la Ray Patin Productions, studio che realizza moltissimi cortometraggi pubblicitari fino al 1962.
Scompare a Burbank, in California, il 16 gennaio 1976.
Ray Maurice Patin was born October 14, 1906 in Lafayette, Louisiana, to Maurice Patin and Therese Durand, both born in Louisiana from French families. Ray had an elder sister, Vinnie Therese. His father founded the Daily Advertiser newspaper. By 1920 the Patins were living in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The family then moved to California in the early twenties.
Ray made his debut in animation in the early thirties, at Charles Mintz’s studio. He then went to work for Hugh Harman and Rudolph Ising.
On 17 settembre 1932, in Los Angeles, Ray married Maxine Jane Riley (1914-2010), and a daughter, Renee, was born in 1939.
In December, 1937 Patin entered the Disney Studio, where he animated on Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck shorts until 1941.
After the 1941 strike he moved to the Schlesinger/Warner Bros. Studio, as an animator and story-man.
In 1944 he was part of Industrial Fim and Poster Service (which later became UPA) and he started drawing comics for the Sangor Shop, headed by Jim Davis. The following year he was appointed president of the Screen Cartoonists Guild and he left Warners to join Davis at J. Richard Weston’s Carry-Weston studio, where he animated on the defense film The Inside Story of Seaman Joe.
He then went back to Disneys as an animator and story-man, staying for about a year.
In 1947 he founded Ray Patin Productions, a studio which produced lots of animated commercials until 1962.
Patin passed away in Burbank, California, on January 16, 1976.
