Obscure Artists No. 6
BOB FORGIONE
Nel 1930 Bob risiede a New York con i genitori adottivi Angelo and Luisa Schillica.
Nel frattempo, Forgione disegna anche da solo storie per la Atlas/Marvel (Adventures Into the Unknown, Astonishing, Journey Into Unknown Worlds, Marines in Battle, Strange Tales, Uncanny Tales) e per la Charlton (Crime and Justice, Lawbreakers Suspense Stories, Racket Squad in Action, The Thing, Hot Rods and Racing Cars, True Life Secrets, Unknown Soldier in Never Again), spesso in collaborazione con Albert Tyler or Vince Alascia.
Altre editrici con le quali Forgione collabora negli anni Cinquanta e nei primi Sessanta sono la American Comics Group (Adventures Into The Unknown, Forbidden Worlds, Lovelorn, Out of the Night, Romantic Adventures, My Romantic Adventures); la St. John (Authentic Police Cases, Strange Terrors, Weird Horrors); la Fawcett (Unknown Worlds); la Toby Press (Sorority Secrets); e la DC Comics (All-American Men of War, Our Army at War, Our Fighting Forces, G.I.
Insieme contribuiscono a Lassie, Silvertip e Bat Masterson fino all’inizio del 1960.
Robert Neil Forgione was born on November 26, 1929 in Mount Vernon, New York to Peter Forgione (1905-1968), a chaffeur. By 1930 they were living in New York with their adoptive parents Angelo and Luisa Schillica.
In 1948 he attended the New York Franklin School of Art and later the New York School of Art under Jerry Robinson, son after becoming one of his assistants.
For about a year in 1950-51, Forgione assisted John Belfi on the Straight Arrow daily strip, released by the Bell Syndicate.
His first documented solo comic book work is the story Little Dog’s Escape, which appeared in D.S. Publishing’s Red Arrow no. 2 with a July/August 1951 cover date.
In 1952 he married Louise Loren.
During 1952-53, Forgione drew several stories together with Jerry Robinson for such Atlas/Marvel titles as Battlefront, Battle Action, Adventures Into Weird Worlds, Justice Comics, Suspense, Love Romances, and Mystic.
In the meantime, Forgione was also drawing his own stories for Atlas/Marvel (Adventures Into the Unknown, Astonishing, Journey Into Unknown Worlds, Marines in Battle, Strange Tales, Uncanny Tales) and Charlton (Crime and Justice, Lawbreakers Suspense Stories, Racket Squad in Action, The Thing, Hot Rods and Racing Cars, True Life Secrets, Unknown Soldier in Never Again), often in collaboration with Albert Tyler or Vince Alascia.
Other publishers Forgione worked for during the 1950s and early 1960s were American Comics Group (Adventures Into The Unknown, Forbidden Worlds, Lovelorn, Out of the Night, Romantic Adventures, My Romantic Adventures); St. John (Authentic Police Cases, Strange Terrors, Weird Horrors); Fawcett (Unknown Worlds); Toby Press (Sorority Secrets); DC Comics (All-American Men of War, Our Army at War, Our Fighting Forces, G.I. Combat), mostly with inking by Jack Abel.
A versatile artist, Forgione was able to tackle different genres with ease, drawing characters that were recognizable for their long noses and sparkling eyes.
In 1956 Forgione went back to assisting Jerry Robinson on his Dell/Western comic assignments. They worked together on Lassie, Silvertip, and Bat Masterson until early 1960. Forgione drew two issues of Lassie by himself in 1956.
All in all, Forgione illustrated over 300 comic book stories, the last one being I Detest You! in My Romantic Adventures no. 137, cover-dated February, 1964.
Shortly after he had taken over the artwork on the Phantom syndicated strip, Sy Barry hired Forgione as his assistant on the dailies. Thus, from late 1961 to late 1965 Forgione worked as an uncredited penciller on The Phantom. This was undoubtedly the strip’s best period after Ray Moore’s tenure in the 1930s. Forgione brought a variety of camera shots to the strip, a masterful use of light and shade, as well as several pretty female characters. Sy Barry’s inking perfectly complemented his pencil art.
After leaving Barry, Forgione went to work in TV animation, drawing storyboards for commercials with Pablo Ferro Films. From 1967-79 he was a vice-president at the William Esty Agency, then he was a director at EUE/Screen Gems from 1980 onwards.
Forgione was back assisting Jerry Robinson in the mid-1970s.
Forgione married Laura Cathreen Carlen in Clark, Nevada, on October 27, 1979.
In 1987 he got married a third time, with Barbara Pittman.
He last resided in Westwood, Bergen County, New Jersey.
Forgione passed away on December 4, 1994 at age 65.
