Amazing Animators No. 6
MANUEL PEREZ
Per Steve Krantz e Ralph Bakshi è animatore dei lungometraggi Fritz the Cat (1972), Heavy Traffic (1973), The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat (1974), The Lord of the Rings (1978) e Hey, Good Lookin’ (1982).
Per Ruby-Spears dirige episodi della serie TV The Plastic Man Adventure/Comedy Hour (1979-80).
Manuel Perez was born June 17, 1914 in Morenci, Arizona, to Abraham Pérez and Josephine Alférez.
After moving to California, he joined the Leon Schlesinger/Warner Bros. animation studio as an apprentice animator in 1937.
On April 17, 1938, in Los Angeles, he married the twemty-year-old Concepción Pereira.
From 1940-1955 he was a full-fledged animator in the team headed by director Isadore “Friz” Freleng, producing shorts in the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series. The team also included, among others, Gil Turner, Dick Bickenbach, Ken Champin, Gerry Chiniquy, and Phil Monroe.
From 1946-48, Perez was also one of the animators who drew funny animal comic books for the California branch of Sangor Studios, headed by Jim Davis. His stories appeared on comics published by Better/Standard such as Barnyard Comics, Coo Coo Comics, Goofy Comics, and Happy Comics. He occasionally wrote the scripts for some of them, too.
In 1952 he spent a brief period at UPA, animating Mr. Magoo.
From 1958-63 he animated at Hanna-Barbera, Filmfair, and Ed Graham. In 1963 he joined Freleng at his new studio, once again animating Warner Bros. characters and later The Pink Panther, The Inspector, Roland and Rattfink, The Ant and the Aardvark, The Tijuana Toads, and Super President until 1971.
In 1964 and 1967 he contributed to two Charlie Brown specials for Bill Melendez.
For Steve Krantz and Ralph Bakshi he animated on the features Fritz the Cat (1972), Heavy Traffic (1973), The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat (1974), The Lord of the Rings (1978), and Hey, Good Lookin’ (1982).
He also regularly contributed to the specials produced by Chuck Jones, from The Cricket in Times Square (1973) to Daffy Duck’s Thanks-for-Giving Special (1981).
For Filmation Associates he animated on the feature Journey Back to Oz (1974). For Sanrio he was a sequence director on the feature Winds of Change (1978). For Ruby-Spears he directed episodes of the TV series The Plastic Man Adventure/Comedy Hour (1979-80). For Disney he animated on the educational film Foods and Fun: A Nutrition Adventure (1980).
His last collaboration as an animator was on the Hanna-Barbera feature Heidi’s Song. It was released in November 1982, but Perez had passed away on January 18, 1981 in Van Nuys, California.
