LU KIMMEL

Louis (Lu) Kimmel nasce a Brooklyn, New York nel 1905 da Isaac Kimmel (1878-?) e Victoria (Witty) Denkel (1875-1941), entrambi immigrati austriaci. Lu è il primo di sei figli, con Murray, Molly, Lottie, William e Abraham.

Inizia la sua carriera artistica poco più che ventenne, illustrando copertine per la rivista Outlook. Dal 1929 al 1936 è illustratore per Il Saturday Evening Post, ma negli anni Trenta e Quaranta realizza illustrazioni anche per manifesti e per riviste quali People's Home Journal, The Household Magazine, This Week, Liberty, Woman's Day, Family Circle e Farm Journal. Dipinge anche copertine per pulp magazines quali The Danger Trail e True Detective.

Nel 1949 inizia a dipingere copertine per i tascabili della New American Library (Signet), ed è ricordato in particolare per quelle che abbelliscono i romanzi hard-boiled di Mickey Spillane, come I, the Jury, One Lonely Night, Kiss Me, Deadly e Vengeance Is Mine.

Nel 1950 riprende gli studi artistici per ottenere il diploma che gli consente di insegnare arte commerciale presso lo Hunter College e la Commercial Illustrators School di New York.

Cimentandosi con vari generi, realizza copertine anche per i tascabili con etichetta Gold Medal (1954-63), Crest (1955), Dell (1956), Pyramid (1957) e Berkley (1957-58). Tra la fine degli anni Cinquanta e l'inizio dei Sessanta realizza anche illustrazioni per riviste per soli uomini come Men e Cavalier, poi si dedica esclusivamente alla pittura.

Kimmel scompare nel Queens, a New York, nel 1973, lasciando la moglie Alice e il figlio Paul.

Louis (Lu) Kimmel was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1905 to Isaac Kimmel (1878-?) and Victoria (Witty) Denkel (1875-1941), both from Austria. Lu was the first of six children, his siblings being Murray, Molly, Lottie, William and Abraham.

Lu attended Pratt Institute of the Arts and studied under William Merritt Chase, Pruett Carter and George Luks. He began his art career in his early twenties, illustrating covers for The Outlook magazine. From 1929 to 1936 he did several illustrations for The Saturday Evening Post, but through the 1930s and 1940s he also did illustrations for posters and for such magazines as People's Home Journal, The Household Magazine, This Week, Liberty, Woman's Day, Family Circle and Farm Journal. He also painted covers for such pulp magazines as The Danger Trail and True Detective.

In 1949 he started painting paperback covers for New American Library (Signet), and he is most remembered for those which graced such Mickey Spillane hard-boiled novels as I, the Jury, One Lonely Night, Kiss Me, Deadly and Vengeance Is Mine.

In 1950 he went back to studying art in order to get a diploma which allowed him to teach commercial art at Hunter College and at the Commercial Illustrators School in New York.

Tackling various genres, he also painted paperback covers for Gold Medal (1954-63), Crest (1955-56), Pyramid (1957) and Berkley (1957-58). In the late 1950s and early 1960s he also did illustrations for such men's magazines as Men and Cavalier, before devoting himself completely to painting.

Kimmel passed away in Queens, New York, in 1973, leaving wife Alice and son Paul.
