LEE HOOPER


Leroy C. Hooper nasce a Chicago, Illinois, il 18 settembre 1917 da Logan ed Evie Hooper. La famiglia risiede a Big Mound, nella
contea di Wayne, Illinois.

Nel 1938 Hooper entra allo Studio Disney con il ruolo di character designer. Contribuisce, tra l'altro, al lungometraggio Fantasia.
Con la stessa mansione passa nel 1940 allo studio di animazione di Leon Schlesinger, dove resta fino al 1943.

Dopo il servizio militare (durante la guerra è di stanza in Germania), nel 1946-50 è assistente di Gus Arriola per la strip Gordo.

Nel 1950 comincia a disegnare storie per i comic books della Western Printing, pubblicati con etichetta Dell, dedicandosi soprattutto
ai personaggi Disney. In particolare, disegna numerose storie con il piccolo amerindio Little Hiawatha (Penna Bianca). È anche disegnatore e/o
inchiostratore e letterista di storie con personaggi di Warner Bros. (Bugs Bunny, Tweety & Sylvester), MGM (Tom & Jerry, Barney Bear, Big Spike and Little Tyke) e Walter Lantz (Andy Panda). La collaborazione con la Western prosegue fino al 1960, anche con alcuni libri illustrati con i personaggi di Hanna-Barbera.

Dal 1969 al 1973 è assistente di Gene Hazelton per chine e lettering delle serie quotidiana e settimanale di The Flintstones.

Nel 1978-79 inchiostra diverse storie dei Flintstones e di Yogi Bear per i comic books della Marvel su matite di Dick Bickenbach.

Scompare a Santa Ana, in California, il 21 dicembre 2003.

 

Leroy C. Hooper was born September 18, 1917 in Chicago, Illinois, to Logan and Evie Hooper. The family resided in Big Mound, Wayne county, Illinois.

In 1938 Hooper joined the Disney Studio as a character designer. He contributed to the animated feature Fantasia. He moved to the Leon
Schlesinger studio in 1940 staying until 1943.

After military service (he was in Germany with the U.S. troops during WW2), he assisted Gus Arriola on the Gordo newspaper strip from 1946-50.

In 1950 he started drawing stories for comic books published by Western Printing with a Dell label, mainly featuring Disney characters. He drew several stories starring the diminutive native American Little Hiawatha. He also drew and lettered stories featuring Warner Bros. (Bugs Bunny, Tweety & Sylvester), MGM (Tom & Jerry, Barney Bear, Big Spike and Little Tyke), and Walter Lantz characters (Andy Panda). His collaboration with Western went on until 1960, and it also included pencil art on Hanna-Barbera children's books.

From 1969-73 Hooper assisted Gene Hazelton on the Flintstones daily and Sunday newspaper strips.

During 1978-79 he inked several Flintstones and Yogi Bear stories for Marvel comic books, over pencils by Dick Bickenbach.

Hooper passed away in Santa Ana, California, on December 21, 2003.
