Daniel J. Gormley was born in Albany, New York, on December 17, 1913, to John and Jennie Gormley. Other siblings were Jack and Matthew.

He started drawing comics in 1939, initially working at the Bert Whitman Associates studio and contributing to titles of publishers Holyoke, Fox and Centaur until 1941. That year saw the start of his long collaboration with Western Printing's New York office, which produced comics under the Dell label. Under Oskar Lebeck's and later Matt Murphy's supervision, Gormley initially drew adventure series, later moving on to humor and funny animals, featuring characters from MGM (Tom & Jerry), Walter Lantz (Woody Woodpecker, Andy Panda), and UPA (Mr. Magoo).

From the early 1940s onwards he most likely shared a studio with artist Lloyd White and, between 1948 and 1952, with Suzanne Seaborne, who inked and lettered stories for both of them.

Gormley wrote, drew and copyrighted two series, Three Little Gremlins and Panamint Patty, both published by Dell/Western.

Between 1957 and 1962, again for Dell/Western, Gormley mainly drew Nancy (created by Ernie Bushmiller), from scripts and sketches by John Stanley, as well as the Terrytoons characters (Heckle & Jeckle, Hashimoto San, Mighty Mouse).

He also drew hundreds of covers and a few children's books. Although he never worked in the animation field, he had a lively, dynamic style which characterized various series for several years.

His last stories appeared in early 1965 in the Gold Key-labeled books.

Gormley passed away in Albany in November 1976.
