CHARLES BINGER
Charles Ashford Binger nasce il 12 ottobre 1907 in Gran Bretagna. Inizia la sua carrier dipingendo manifesti per la Twentieth Century Fox UK.
Durante la II Guerra Mondiale è membro del London Fire Service e della Air Sea Rescue Research. Realizza illustrazioni per campagne come quella del prestito di guerra. I suoi lavori vengono notati da Sir Winston
Churchill e da vari re e regine europei. A Binger vengono affidati anche i ritratti del Bomber Command Eagle Squadron, I primi americani ad agire sul teatro europeo.
Dopo la Guerra Binger si trasferisce a New York City ed inizia a realizzare copertine per Colliers Magazine e vari editori di libri tascabili quali Fawcett, Signet, Pyramid, Pocket, Bantam e Avon. Le sue copertine abbelliscono romanzi di Nathaniel West, Aldous Huxley, John Collier, Ray Bradbury, Erle Stanley Gardner e molti altri ancora. Lo si ricorda soprattutto per le sue copertine di fantascienza negli anni Cinquanta, e per quelle per storie poliziesche hard boiled. Binger contuna anche a dipingere manifesti cinematografici, per film quali La magnifica preda e Comancheros. Realizza inoltre ritratti di famosi attori, attrici e uomini d'affari.
Binger continua a lavorare fino al 1970, e scompare nel gennaio 1974 a Westchester, New York. Una ampia retrospettiva dei suoi lavori ha luogo a Los Angeles nel 2011.

Charles Ashford Binger was born October 12, 1907 in England. He started his career painting movie posters
for Twentieth Century Fox UK.
During WW2 he served as a member of the London Fire Service and Air Sea Rescue Research. He also supplied art for campaigns such as the wartime English Savings Bond Campaign. His work drew notice from Sir Winston Churchill, and several of Europe's crowned heads. Binger was also commissioned to paint portraits of the Bomber Command Eagle Squadron, the first Americans in the European Theater.
Binger moved to New York City after the War, and began painting covers for Colliers Magazine and several paperback publishers including Fawcett, Signet, Pyramid, Pocket, Bantam, Avon. His cover art was used on books by Nathaniel West, Aldous Huxley, John Collier, Ray Bradbury, Erle Stanley Gardner, and many more. He is perhaps best remembered for his science fiction covers in the 1950s, and for his covers for hard-boiled detective pulps. Binger continued to paint movie posters, for such films as River of No Return and The Comancheros. He also made portraits of several famous actors, actresses, and businessmen.
Binger continued to work until 1970, and died in January 1974 in Westchester, New York. A major retrospective show of his work was held in Los Angeles in 2011.
