BOB GRANT

Born in California on March 10, 1916, Robert Grant was hired at the Disney Studio on February 25, 1935 as an assistant to Hank Porter in the Publicity Art Department. With Porter he drew the newspaper comic adaptations of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937-38) and Pinocchio (1939-40), besides doing numerous promotional posters and illustrations based on Disney shorts. In November 1939 he took over the artwork on the weekly Silly Symphony page from Al Taliaferro, continuing to draw it until January 18, 1943 (the series was now titled José Carioca), when he was drafted. Just before he left, he drew the January 24 and 31, 1943 Mickey Mouse Sunday pages. Back to civilian life and to the Disney Studio on March 4, 1946, Grant resumed his work on the Disney characters illustrating children's books (Bambi, Uncle Remus) published by  Simon & Schuster, Whitman and Golden Press. From January 1947 to March 1962, he drew the Merry Menagerie daily panel, with gags by by Bob Karp. In 1956 he drew the January  22 Donald Duck Sunday page replacing Al Taliaferro. In March of the same year he started penciling the Scamp dailies and Sundays. Except for leave of absences due to illness, he continued drawing the grey pup until February 1961 (Sundays), November 1962 (dailies). On April 29, 1964 he left the Disney Studio, but resumed drawing the Scamp strip as a freelancer in March 1965. He continued until a few months before he passed away on November 15, 1968. It is known that Grant loved horses and that he owned a small ranch near Los Angeles.
