OWEN FITZGERALD


Everett Owen Fitzgerald nasce il 30 novembre 1916 a Cardwell, nel Missouri, da James T. Fitzgerald e Eva Jane Carr.

Intorno al 1935 si trasferisce in California e frequenta lo Chouinard Art Institute a Los Angeles. Nel 1936 debutta come intercalatore allo studio Disney, dove resta per due anni. Il 26 novembre 1938 sposa a Los Angeles Jenell Forester, che gli darà un figlio. Passa poi allo studio Schlesinger/Warner Bros., dove realizza layouts per i cortometraggi diretti da Friz Freleng.

Nel 1943 realizza alcune storie a fumetti per i Sangor Studios diretti da Jim Davis e layouts per cortometraggi della MGM, ma viene presto richiamato alle armi, dove contribuisce a diversi film per addestrare le truppe USA.

Dopo il congedo, nel 1945, è di nuovo attivo come disegnatore di fumetti. Ancora per i Sangor Studios disegna numerose storie pubblicate dalle editrici ACG e Better/Standard. Dal 1950 al 1960 collabora con la DC Comics, diventando tra l'altro il principale disegnatore delle serie intitolate ai comici Bob Hope e Jerry Lewis.

Nel 1958 torna all'animazione con la Warner Bros., mentre continua a disegnare fumetti, assistendo a lungo Hank Ketcham per gli albi e poi per la tavola settimanale di Dennis the Menace.

Dagli anni Settanta in poi realizza layouts e storyboards per De Patie-Freleng, Hanna-Barbera, Ruby-Spears, DIC, Graz Entertainment, Warner Bros. ed MGM, ed è di nuovo attivo nei fumetti dal 1973 al 1990. Disegna, tra l'altro, numerose storie Disney con Topolino, Pippo, Minni, Clarabella e Orazio destinate al mercato extra-americano. Poi disegna le strisce e le tavole di Bugs Bunny per i quotidiani.

Scompare il 23 luglio 1994 a Los Angeles. Sua moglie era deceduta nel giugno 1987.


 

Everett Owen Fitzgerald was born November 30, 1916 in Cardwell, Missouri to James T. Fitzgerald and Eva Jane Carr.

He moved to California about 1935 and attended Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles. He made his debut as an inbetweener at the Disney studio in 1936, staying for two years. On November 26, 1938 he married Jenell Forester, who bore him a child. He then worked at the Schlesinger/Warner Bros. studio, drawing layouts for shorts directed by Friz Freleng.

In 1943 his first few comics for Jim Davis at Sangor Studios and drew layouts for MGM shorts, but he was soon drafted, and contributed to animate military training films.

Back to civilian life in 1945, Fitzgerald was again active as a comic artist, drawing several storied for Sangor Studios which were published by ACG and Better/Standard. From 1950- 60 he worked for DC Comics, where he was the main artists on the series starring comedians Bob Hope and Jerry Lewis.

He went back to animation in 1958 with Warner Bros., and continued to draw comics, long assisting Hank Ketcham on comics and later on the Dennis the Menace Sunday page.

From the 1970s onwards he drew layouts and storyboards for De Patie-Freleng, Hanna-Barbera, Ruby-Spears, DIC, Graz Entertainment, Warner Bros. and MGM, and he was again active in comics from 1973-90. He drew several Disney stories featuring Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Minnie Mouse, Clarabelle Cow and Horace Horsecollar for the Overseas market. He then drew the Bugs Bunny newspaper strip.

Fitzgerald passed away on July 23, 1994 in Los Angeles. His wife had died in June 1987.
