Obscure Artists No. 5

BEN FARISH

Thomas Benson Farish is really one of those obscure artists whose life and works are lost in the folds of time. Farish was born June 26, 1911 in Denver, Colorado, to John Carter Farish (1891-1920) and Frances I. Milton. He grew up in Pensacola, Florida with his stepparents Fisher and Lee Edge, and with stepbrothers Joe and Fisher, Jr.

On June 15, 1936, Farish married Ernestine Baker in Florida. They had two children, Patricia and Carter.

In 1943-44, while working as an inbetweener at Famous Studios, he wrote and drew funny animal comics for the Sangor Studio, which
were published by ACG/Creston and Better/Standard.

His animation career continued at Transfilm, where he worked together with Steve Muffatti, Bill Hudson, Keith Robinson, and Howard Smith. He then did work for the New York Institute of Technology through school founder and producer Alexander Shure, and later in California at Filmation Associates.

Farish died May 27, 2002 at Villa Maria Care Center, Santa Maria, California, and is buried at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery, next to his wife Ernestine, who had died in 1988 at 72 years old.
