Amazing Animators No. 15

ART SCOTT

The Adventures of Cyclone Malone.

William Arthur Scott  Jr. was born October 18, 1914 in Astoria, Oregon. He grew up in British Columbia until his family moved to Long Beach, California in 1924. Scott attended Long Beach Junior College and then UCLA, signing up for art. He married Eva Dorothy Tennant and had a daughter, Patricia, born in 1929.

After graduating in 1938 he joined the Charles Mintz studio as an in-betweener under Art Davis. After being moved to the story department, he was finally laid off in 1939 and went to work for Disney as an assistant to Dick Lundy and Ed Love. He also worked on Fantasia and Bambi, and during the War was assigned to produce Navy training films in Jacksonville, Florida. By 1941 he was a full-fledged animator on Donald Duck shorts for directors Jack King and Jack Hannah.

After the War he worked as a story man on Mickey Mouse and Pluto shorts as well as on the feature film, Melody Time.

While at Disney, he also sang with a jazz group which included Ward Kimball on trombone and Frank Thomas on piano. He also had a magic act which traveled to military bases across California, and was assisted by Bob "Tiger" West.

Scott left Disney in 1946 and founded his own company, Art Scott Productions, working with his close friend, animator Frank McSavage. The company produced animated commercials as well as limited-animation cartoons based on music called Mell-O-Tunes. Scott also designed puppets and did voices for a puppet show called The Adventures of Cyclone Malone.

From 1946-49 Scott did several stories for the Catholic comic book, Topix.

He returned to Disney in 1955-56, again as a story man, working on The Mickey Mouse Club.

Scott later worked as an animator, story man, director, production manager and producer for various studios including John Sutherland, Polaris, and Clampett/Snowball. In 1960 he joined Hanna-Barbera, where he was steadily on staff from 1963 until 1993. From 1977-83 he also wrote several Hanna-Barbera coloring books. He also did stints at Larry Harmon Productions (1960-62), Fred Calvert Productions (1971-72) and Ruby-Spears (1982-83) before finally directing for L.A. Animation in 1998.

Scott passed away on May 19, 1999 in Los Angeles.
